ALL THAT WE TOUCH WE CHANGE / 2026

Lena Maria Thüring’s new video installation «All that we touch we change» is dedicated to the resilience of plants and the conditions of their reproduction in extreme environments. At its centre is the super bloom in the Californian desert, a rare botanical phenomenon in which, after particularly rainy periods, long-dormant seeds germinate and bloom simultaneously. Drawing on an exploration of climate change, the artist connects broader social questions with a personal narrative of loss and mourning following a miscarriage, articulated through a spoken and partly sung poetic text. The plants’ capacity for adaptation and regeneration is placed in relation to human experience, while also pointing to a rhythmic exchange that connects us to the plant world through breathing: we inhale what they exhale. In the video, the breathing of plants even becomes audible as a flow of life or as a symbol of a fundamental interconnectedness between humans and the environment. The title of the work is a quote by the science fiction author Octavia E. Butler: «All that you touch, you change. All that you change, changes you.» Here, change appears not only as loss, but also as a possibility for further development. Three organically shaped ceramic reliefs accompany the video, forming part of the artist’s ongoing research into human-plant relations. They recall leaves or tongues and, metaphorically, become organs that embody both breath and language at once.

Lena Maria Thürings neue Videoinstallation «All that we touch we change» widmet sich der Widerstandsfähigkeit von Pflanzen und den Bedingungen ihrer Fortpflanzung in extremen Umgebungen. Zentrales Motiv ist die Superblüte in der kalifornischen Wüste, ein seltenes botanisches Phänomen, bei dem nach besonders regenreichen Perioden lange ruhende Samen zeitgleich keimen und blühen. Ausgehend von der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Klimawandel verbindet die Künstlerin im Video insbesondere über den gesprochenen, teils gesungenen poetischen Text gesellschaftliche Fragestellungen mit persönlichen Erfahrungen von Verlust und Trauer im Zusammenhang mit einer Fehlgeburt. Die Fähigkeit zur Anpassung oder Regeneration der Pflanzen wird dabei in Beziehung zur menschlichen Erfahrung gesetzt und verweist zugleich auf einen rhythmischen Austausch, der uns über das Atmen mit der Pflanzenwelt verbindet: Wir atmen ein, was sie ausatmen. Im Video wird das Atmen der Pflanzen sogar hörbar als Lebensfluss oder Sinnbild einer grundlegenden Verbundenheit zwischen Mensch und Umwelt. Der Titel der Arbeit ist ein Zitat der Science-Fiction Autorin Octavia E. Butler: «All that you touch, you change. All that you change, changes you.» Veränderung erscheint hier nicht nur als Verlust, sondern auch als Möglichkeit von Weiterentwicklung. Drei organisch geformte Keramikreliefs ergänzen das Video, die Teil der fortlaufenden Recherche der Künstlerin zu Mensch-Pflanze-Beziehungen sind. Sie erinnern an Blätter oder Zungen und werden im übertragenen Sinne zu Organen, die Atmung sowie Sprache zugleich verkörpern.
